Three years ago, if you asked me, “would you ever consider homeschooling your kids?”…I would have said “NEVER!” Since then, the world has changed a lot, and so has our family.

We are a year and a half into full-time RV travel and I’m so thankful for the flexibility Roadschooling brings to our family.

When we first hit the road at the beginning of 2021, we tried to keep up with all the books and many different types of curriculum out there. The space to store the books was a challenge living in an RV as well as trying to work when we are clearly out numbered. Adjusting the curriculum while trying to get mail was also a challenge.

There are a few key things we want to share that we really love!

I’m so thankful another Full-time RV mom told me about Miacademy! It solved those two things for us. We went out and bought our daughters chrome books which we scored at Best Buy for $100 each. We bought a membership to Miacademy and created the parent login, and the 3 accounts for our daughters. We have been using this for the last 6 months and it has been a GAME CHANGER! We use this for 90% of our curriculum. Our oldest daughters use Teaching Textbooks for Math, but other than that we use Miacademy for everything else.

Our daughters all have different learning styles and they  have different favorite subjects. Our oldest daughter (11 years old)  really loves Spanish. Our middle daughters (8 years old) favorite subjects are  Bible and History. She specifically loves where Jesus walked on water. Our youngest daughter (6 years old) loves Math and Social Studies, her favorite lesson so far is the Farm animals.

Benefits we have seen so far:

  1. We were able to drop off all the curriculum at our storage unit, saving us a ton of space!

  2. We were able to devote more time to our businesses because our daughters can independently operate Miacademy about 80% of the time. Our 11 year old daughter will usually help our youngest daughter if she has a quick question.

  3. We can easily adjust the difficulty level rather than buying more books.

  4. We can use the chat feature to ask questions, and the customer service is impeccable.

  5. On a travel day, they can work ahead in the car! (We have internet in our truck)

  6. They reward the kids with gold, and castles, which excites and motivates our kids. Check out the NEW UPDATED Youtube video to see what they think.

If you are thinking about this lifestyle and roadschooling intimidates you, I suggest trying it out. You could easily try it in addition to public school or incorporate it into your other curriculum while you test it out.

We also really enjoy the Junior Ranger program through the National Park Service! Kids can learn from rangers, and learning booklets they get. The collect badges every park we go! A great tip we learned was that all 4th graders get a Free National Park Pass for their families for an entire year!

The most important thing to remember is to find out what works best for your family. It might take some trial and error, but don’t be afraid to change it up!
